Why Moffatt Matters - BeDevil and Night Cries
Tracey Moffatt is now best known for her work as a photographer and visual artist, but her early work as a filmmaker seems to grow richer as time passes. The trio of ghost stories in BeDevil , and the preceding short film, Night Cries , express a unique awareness of cinema history, drawing on an eclectic range of inspirations – from Vincente Minnelli’s dance dramas to Japanese master Kobayashi, and more. These are adventurous, assured and sublimely idiosyncratic works that were too extreme to be embraced by audiences when they first appeared, and can only be fully appreciated on the big screen.
Launching this June, the Why Matters series takes a closer look at cinematic greats: Jean Renior, Gillo Pontecorvo, Grigori Kozintsev and Tracey Moffatt.
Presented by film historian, distributor, exhibitor, documentary producer and director Andrew Pike, the four- part screening series will take audiences through a journey of classics from 1937-1993.
